Asteroid 433 EROS enters the sign of Aries on the 21th of February 2008 and transits there until the 2nd of Aril 2008. What does this mean?

“Aries is the point of all beginings...all the energies are self-centred and self-directed. Before one can give oneself away, there must be something to give! So, I AM is the key word of the self-assertive Arian...Wherever Aries is placed in the horoscope (the house it rules) is where you, as spirit, begin to operate." --Isabel Hickey

Eros through Aries activates the traditional ruler, Mars, god of war! Strong, willful, audacious and sometimes a little clumsy, this deity is about taking action, moving forward and asserting the will! The emphasis is on initiation, via a potent forward thrust!

Aries is a sign of passion, not in the ancient Greek/Pisces sense of suffering, but in the first line of the English dictionary-- sense of adventure - potent appetites, powerful emotions, strong desires and boundless enthusiasm!

As a cardinal fire sign, Aries conducts energy lightening fast! The cardinal nature of the first sign of the zodiac implies a physical boldness that likes to get the ball rolling when it comes to propositions and undertakings. Where Aries is found is the area where we want to be head of the table, king of the mountain—total top dog. The Ram needs to add a string of nouns to the words I am, by answering the question I am what? .

Richard Idemon said that “the sign a planet is in represents the archetypal principle through which it is going to present itself.” What principle will that be for Eros as this asteroid travels through Aries?

Because the Aries Point is associated with collective experiences, this transit may link to the exposure of "hidden love". Maybe feelings kept secret, even from ourselves, rise up and demand acknowledgement. Clandestine affairs may be revealed, passionate artistic endeavors awarded, or transformational relationships recognized in the public eye. Issues of social pressure and the expectations of THEY could press us to make choices for or against out heart's desire.

Eros in Aries is at his most brash. See where this transit falls in natal, progressed and composite horoscopes, watching transits over critical degrees!

CRITICAL DEGREES

Those with natal, progressed or Draconic planets at CRITICAL degrees of the the Cardinal signs—0, 13 &26—may notice the transit of Eros over theses points particularly as matters come to a head.

Decanates

It may be mentioned that these influences (decanates) are real and actual in their natures, quite as much so as those of the signs.

--Alan Leo

The elements of the signs are divided into decans, or divisions of 10 degrees. There are several traditional ways to assign the decanates--the following being my favorite.

Here each sign is divided into three lots of 10 degrees, the first taking on the nature of the sign itself. The second decan takes on qualities of the next sign in its element and the third taking on the subsequent sign of its element. The sub-rulers, and their aspects to other planets and the original sign ruler, are always important to consider.

0 to 9 59 Aries:Aries Here Eros expresses in a raw and vigorous decan with the assertive and action packed energy of Aries in full force without modification. It needs to release a potent, healthy aggression. Get your way, get things done, get some attention!

10 to 19 59’Aries: LeoThis decan modifies the energy of Aries with the life force of the Sun. Here the expression is more aspiring and determined—able to stick to goals easier and be magnanimous. Play, relate, share adventures!

20 to 29 59' Aries: SagittariusThe Jupiter decan brings wisdom to the Aries fire, filling it with a greater sense of destiny and understanding of the big picture. It can be an unsettled time. Seek purpose and philosophical meaning.

Birth of VenusEros and the 0 Degree Aries Point

Eros Conjunct the AP / Draconic North Lunar Node

We all have our Draconic North Lunar Node at 0 Aries!

The Draco system, developed in ancient Babylon, takes the degree of the North Lunar Node, called Caput Draconis or the dragon's head, as zero Aries. All other planets and point then follow suit as in the vernal (normal) chart. The chart patters between the two systems will be identical (aspect relationships don't change), yet they fall in different signs, and new relationships may be discovered.

If you have a planet at 10 degrees of Taurus (or 40 degrees ahead of 0 Aries, it will make relationship with any planet or point that is also 40 degrees ahead of the North Lunar Node. For those of you unfamiliar with this system, experimentation is encouraged.

With transiting Eros conjunct the AP, this is an important time to get clear on intentions. Associations with others may increase or take on deeper, more intimate meaning. Transits to the Nodes often bring seemingly fated encounters, so be alert for significant experiences with those of like, or controversial, mind.

Here are some examples:

Eros Conjunct the AP in aspect to the Ascendant

This contact could bring up many questions for the native, such as: "Who am I in relationship to the greater whole? How do I fit with my current day to day activities, the people I attract and those attracted to me? What is my sense of self in the world?

Eros here could spice up the image, giving the native extra charisma and magnetism. Secretes may also be difficult to keep, as the AP tends to make personal interests public.

Eros Conjunct the AP in aspect to the Midheaven

This contact could suggest a surge of passion for the career, mission or profession. The possibility of gaining public notoriety increases, as does the desire for such recognition. The social status may be emphasized, and would be difficult to conceal.

Eros Conjunct the AP on the Vertex

This contact could indicate an exceptional or amazing event, marked with a particular sense of epiphany. In a seemingly random, daily or public situation, a connection is made, through a concept, ideal, numinous experience or extraordinary other. If truly activated, the event, inner or outer, will be life altering.

Eros Conjunct the AP/MIDPOINTS:

AP/Eros on Solar midpoints

Increases drive for distinction, ambition and achievement of goals. The native's passions and heart felt interests could become more pronounced as life brings opportunity to achieve greater significance.

AP/Eros on Lunar midpoints

This contact may increase the native's sensitivity to the public. Nurturing qualities, empathy and emotions soar, as does the longing for connection to a greater whole. Group involvement's with family (biological, urban or tribe), gain importance.

AP/Eros on Mercury midpoints

Increases desire and passion for communication with society at large. Can be good for public speaking, teaching and performing arts. The written and the spoken word carry more impact. Success is possible in the publishing field.

AP/Eros on Venus midpoints

Augments creative and artistic passions and the drive to be recognized as a professional artist. This contact is beneficial for public mediation and all areas of diplomacy. Can bring clandestine affairs to the attention of the media. The heart does not remain hidden.

AP/Eros on Mars midpoints

This transit increase the need for physical activity and adventure. The will ignites, and the desire to push through new projects expands. Good for sales, sports events and recreational activities of all kinds. The native now goes for what he or she wants!

AP/Eros on Jupiter midpoints

The desire for public recognition, success and respect increases, along with the opportunity to obtain those desires. Goals expand, as does the confidence and sense of ability to achieve. Good for litigation, publishing, recreation, high finance, and travel.

AP/Eros on Saturn midpoints

Adversity, isolation, struggles and the wound, may bring the native closer to a sense of self-sufficiency in relationship to society. Obligation and responsibility taken without judgment or victimization can lead to fulfillment of ambitions. Ultimately, deeper self-love is possible now, by recognizing where the boundaries lie, and where some wounds remain open.

AP/Eros on Chiron midpoints

This can make an increased awareness of capacity for compassion. Excellent for public speaking (when from the heart), teaching, healing, leading groups and certain acting or performing arts roles. Introspection can lead to illumination at this time.

AP/Eros on Uranus midpoints

Rebellious qualities arise along with desire for freedom. Could mark the formation of unconventional or radical groups bent on social change, or the disassociation from a group no longer authentic. Blasts of insight can be put to good use now!

AP/Eros on Neptune midpoints

Longings for the ineffable heighten along with the desire to belong to a spiritual group or movement linked to ones own heart. Something, or someone, public captures the imagination. Very idealistic, dreamy and ethereal. Potential, as with all Neptune involvement's, for fraud, deception and victimization to stand side by side with spiritual awareness and illumination.

AP/Eros on Pluto midpoints

Dealings with the power of group consciousness (or unconsciousness). Politics. This may be a time of deep psychological insights, where the surface dissolves and the subterranean nature emerges--Potent, intense and full of desire. Harsh drives to transform, at any price. Secretes impossible to hide.

Venus & AdonisEros opposite Asteroid 2101 Adoinis

March 8, 2008 @ 11 Aries

(in orb from March 3-13th)

Human civilization has made spiteful laws, and what nature allows, the jealous laws forbid." [Ovid, Metamorphoses 10.329]

"To Adonis ... Rejoicing in the chase, all-graceful power, sweet plant of Aphrodite, Eros’ (Love’s) delightful flower: descended from the secret bed divine of fair-haired Persephone, ‘tis thine to sink in Tartaros profound, and shine again through heavens illustrious round; come, timely power, with providential care, and to thy mystics earth’s productions bear." - Orphic Hymn 56 to Adonis

Adonis' mythology tells a tale of boundaries, made and broken and the rejection of the sacred feminine, both mortal and deathless.

When young Smyrna failed to honor Aphrodite (failed to recognize the sacred feminine in herself) Aphrodite punished her with a curse. She bestowed on her an overwhelming sexual passion for King Cinyras, her own father.  Frantic with desire, Smyrna tricked her father into sharing his bed for 12 nights running, but when Cinyras discovered the truth, he was outraged. He hunted Smyrna down with a sword and just as he was about to strike, she prayed to the gods for help. They responded by turning her into a Myrrh tree and Cinyras committed suicide.

Nine months later, Adonis was born out of the depts of the Myrrh tree.

The infant ended up in the arms of Aphrodite (who started the whole escapade) but as she was playing with the babe and her young son Eros, she accidentally pricked herself with one of his arrows and fell mad for Adonis. She secreted baby Adonis away in a chest, wanting him only for herself, and left him with Persephone. (presumably until he grew up). But when Persephone looked at Adonis, she was so taken by his beauty she refused to give him back when the time came.

Things got heated and Zeus had to settle the matter by dividing the year into three parts saying Adonis was to spend one third of the year by himself, one third with Persephone, and the rest with Aphrodite. But Adonis never spent any time on his own. When it was ‘his third’, he chose to be with Aphrodite.

Artemis, perhaps angry (because those who saw Aphrodite hunting with Adonis and making love to him in her woods mistook the goddess of love for her) or perhaps aligning more with Persephone who wanted the youth back, sent a boar to attack Adonis and kill him. Wracked with grief when she found him dead, Aphrodite mixed his blood with ambrosia and up sprang a beautiful, blood red, flower, the anemone, whose delicate petals last only a short while. The lovely Beroe, some versions say, is the daughter of Adonis & Aphrodite and that the city of Beyrut in the country today called Lebanon was named after her.

When a child is born of a union in mythology, it is a symbol of the creativity. In this case, the creativity has to do with love, desire and devotion. The mingling of Eros and Adonis suggests charismatic allure, one that is infused with a kind of fascination and inspiration. Here the call of Eros is answered by beauty and the connection by transit can link to having and 'Adonis effect' on others that transcends boundaries and breaks all laws but that of attraction. For those with planets of point close to 11 degrees of the Cardinal signs, this contact may be even more significant.

Aries Myth

AriesAries Mythology

Aries, The Ram, is the first of the twelve zodiacal constellations, and in Greek myth represents the animal whose fleece was sought by Jason and the Argonauts. Legend has it that when King Athamus of Boetia took a second wife, Ino, she was extremely jealous and resentful of his existing children, especially his son, Phrixus. She therefore plotted the failure of the corn crop, intercepted and bribed the messenger sent by her husband to consult an oracle on the matter, and instructed him to say that he had been told that Phrixus had to be sacrificed if the people were to escape starvation.

Despite pleadings from the boy’s mother, Nephele, King Athamus agreed to the sacrifice but, at the very last minute, the boy and his sister, Helle, were saved by a magnificent ram with a golden fleece, sent by Zeus in answer to their mother’s prayers.

Unfortunately, as the ram crossed the narrow stretch of water between Europe and Asia, Helle fell to her death (the straits are still known as Hellespont) but Phrixus was carried safely to the land of Colchis. He gave thanks for his deliverance by sacrificing the ram to Zeus and giving its golden fleece to King Aeetes. The king had the fleece placed in a sacred copse, guarded by a fearsome dragon which never slept. Phrixus later married the king’s daughter and remained in exile for the rest of his life, but the fleece was eventually stolen by Jason. --From Heavens-Above

Zeus then, of course, placed the Ram in the starry sky to honor his deeds.

The brightest star in Aries is Hamal, from the Arabic Al Ras al Hamal, meaning "the Head of the Sheep."  The ancient Greeks from about 1580 B.C. to 360 B.C. oriented the construction of many of their sacred temples in relationship to Hamal.

It appears that Babylonians, Greeks, Persians and Egyptians all agreed on the name of the Ram for this constellation. The Chinese saw it as a dog, though later refer to it as a sheep.
