Eros Through Libra
"Beauty awakens the soul to
act.” --Dante Alighieri
Crossing
the Aries point at Zero
,
EROS enters
the AIR sign of Libra on the 2nd of November
and travels forward until entering Scorpio on the 7th of December. During
this time, it traverses the "Via Combusta" or "Fiery
road" between 15 Libra and 15 Scorpio. For more information
on this area of the zodiac, read the details under Via
Combust . This period also sees the the trine with the Chiron on
the 7th of November at 5 Libra - Aquarius , the conjunction
with Juno on
the 9th of November @ 6 Libra, and the trine
of Eros & Neptune on
the22nd of November @ 17 Libra - Aquarius. Check the ephemeris below
and see where these transits fall in your natal chart! Also read about Eros
decans and the constellation of Libra.
What does this mean, to have EROS wearing the glamorous
robes of JUSTICE and socially significant relationships? As the god
of erotic love expresses here, what inner and outer events will arise?
What changes will be made?
My
friend and colleague, Mystic Medusa,
has offered some apt phrases for Eros in Libra this month.
Some of these themes are explored further in the text.
- Eros in Libra is like beautiful architecture & love
that cannot be--because one is too elegant & values the social
networks too much--so it is channeled into Art instead.
- Seduces through sophistication, through understated taste.
- The Trophy Wife/the Official Catch.
- Subtle as hell. Cannot bear vulgarity.
- Eros in Libra a great foil for all the Scorpio stuff!
- People getting off on being torn between two
lovers.
- Enjoying the game, the chase & the rituals of seduction...
- Lots of older women/younger men energy.
- Perfume magic & love spells when trines Neptune!
- Eros-Chiron – seducing your doctor? Healing sexual hurts?
Rudhyar did not see Libra so
much as a symbol of “balance”
but as a reference to the procedure by which an individual contribution
to the community is weighed. It is a social sign, most concerned
with human interactions. He said, If Libra refers to the ARTS and
to LOVE it is because art is the crystallization of social patterns
of fellowship and the “love of companions” is the essences
of unrestricted sharing and the availability of each to all. LIBRA
is also about esthetics and image! The rulership of Venus underscores the propensity
to relate with others objectively, expressing artistic appreciation,
civility, and the sharing of beauty, truth and light.
The natural seat of Libra is the
seventh house,
the domain of personal one-to-one relationships, committed partnerships,
cooperation, equality or open adversity. Like the symbol of the scales,
Libra weighs and measures each experience, expressing beliefs in
diplomatic and congenial ways. The accent is on relationships with
a social purpose.
Social filters aside, if pressed,
Libra becomes the devil’s advocate and can debate with a detached wrath often
underestimated. They can feel a justification in being "cruel
to be kind". Libra’s soft and agreeable outer nature cloaks
a fierce and potent will. Most of the time, that will is hidden behind
civilities, though not always. Libra’s resources include an
objective and astute mind, fluid and refined communication skills,
sociability, enthusiasm for artistic expression, beauty and creativity,
the desire to share and a commanding faculty to initiate and take
charge.
Libra is ruled by VENUS, goddess
of love, art and union. Co-ruling Taurus, this planet oversees
esthetics, harmony, refinement, affection, attraction, union, cooperation,
values and unity. It is Libra’s connection with Venus that
adds an appreciation of sensuality and culture to this sign, making
it the most social and gregarious of the air triad. Libra also
has the airy qualities of objectivity and intellectual
perception that keeps it from getting lost in the senses or stuck in pragmatic
affairs. Libra is idealistic, with a vision as romantic and rarefied
as the goddess of love herself.
Libra by HOUSE is an area of life
where we need to share our ideals, socialize, experience beauty and
refinement and accommodate to the needs of others so we may have ongoing
relationships and unions. The finely tuned balance between
self-direction and collaboration must be found and expressed through
ideas, companionship and artistic creation. This sign says I balance,
and it must fill in all the blanks: I
balance what? Libra is concerned with the formation of relationships
that lead to the symmetry between the I consciousness and the' we'
consciousness. With EROS traveling here, that ' we' consciousness
is going to get erotic!
Any personal one-to-one experience
can wake this Eros up including dinners out, counseling sessions,
animated discussions or strategy games like chess. The important ingredients
are company, esthetic beauty and social significance. This is not to
say that Eros in Libra will never enter into a taboo relationship,
get roaring drunk or use coarse language. It just means it
will not be comfortable afterwards. One of the challenges
of Eros is to break through the boundaries of superficial propriety
and cultural norms to find out what lies underneath. This is a
messy business for Libra!
Libra, like all the air signs,
is not very cozy with the coarser side of passion. They like the
body as a work of art, a Michelangelo’s David, but not so
much as a sweating and churning and bleeding organism. They may
not be completely prepared to get their hands dirty, metaphorically
or otherwise. Libra wants to stay with the pure beauty of nature
and not enter the devouring realm of merging flesh and tormented
longings where reason holds no sway.
Eros weaves the souls of his victims
in such a way that they are seared together and reshaped with molten
templates. Returned to themselves, they are no longer what
they were before.
Libra resists the twisting and the searing episode
and would much rather walk hand in hand through a meadow full of
flowers, preferably daisies--not narcissus. When Eros finds himself
in this sign, he must break through the natural reluctance to embrace
these base and nether world themes.
Where will EROS in Libra transit
in your natal chart? What planets and points will be contacted? (See
my article on the AP for info on crossing of the Zero Degree
Aries Point!) These areas highlight the inner and outer experiences
that want to awaken. Will you welcome Eros here and open to the passions
of this god?
CRITICAL
DEGREES
Those with natal, progressed or Draconic planets at CRITICAL degrees
of the the Cardinal signs—0, 13 &26—may
notice the transit of Eros over theses points particularly as matters
come to a head.
Decanates
It may be mentioned that these influences (decanates)
are real and actual in their natures, quite as much so as those
of the signs.
--Alan Leo
The elements of the signs are divided
into decans, or divisions of 10 degrees. There are several
traditional ways to assign the decanates--the following being my favorite. Here
each sign is divided into three lots of 10 degrees, the first
taking on the nature of the sign itself. The second decan takes on
qualities of the next sign in its element and the third taking on the
subsequent sign of its element. The sub-rulers, and their aspects to
other planets and the original sign ruler, are always important to
consider.
0 to 9' 59 Libra:
Easy
going, with a cultivated and gentle nature. Nothing course or raw here.
Sensual and artistic; social and attracting. Doesn’t like to do things
alone. Needs to express creativity.
10 to 19' 59 Libra:
This
decan enhances the love of freedom, revolution and experimentation.
Can be a rebel yet hates to upset the apple cart. Mind powerful
and fixed. More stubborn; less vacillating . Unusual art. Loves
a triangle.
20 to 29 59' Libra:
This
decan brings a refreshing mutability and lively mental approach.
Intuitive yet extremely restless in nature. Finds it hard to decide;
easy to bolt. Creative writing strong. Must learn to express the
feelings.

Eros
in Aspect to the Zero Degree
Aries
Point
Civilization is a process in the service of Eros,
whose purpose is to combine single human individuals, and after that
families, then races, peoples and nations, into one great unity,
the unity of mankind. Why this has to happen, we do not know; the
work of Eros is precisely this.-- Sigmund Freud
The Aries point, or vernal equinox
in the tropical zodiac, is a NODE. It marks the place where
the sun crosses the equatorial plain going north. Think of it as a
Sun/earth node, as opposed to the commonly used Lunar nodes which involve
the Sun/earth/Moon).
In the Uranian system, the Aries
Point, or AP, isn't just zero degrees of Aries. It also links
to zero degrees of all the cardinal signs. Every chart—natal,
progressed or horary—has
the AP at exactly the same zero degrees, yet each chart will be unique
as to house placement and planet contacts. Eros apsecting the AP certainly
adds spice, energy and the potential for transformation!
The AP represents a movement from
an inner quality to an outer manifestation. It orients us towards the world at large—society,
public events and all relationships propelled from the individual to
the collective. When a planet or point conjuncts the AP the nature
and energy drive of that planet has the added thrust or urge to express
collectively. It may also represent what the public at large recognize
most readily in us, or remember us for.
Eros in Aspect to the AP suggests
that ones passionate desire for erotic transformation is noticed by
the collective. It is
difficult to hide! Taboo relationships tend to become public, hidden
projects burst onto the scene and suddenly the most intimate details
of life become public property. Society will see the
potent energy as tantalizing or threatening, according to their own
cultural conditioning.
Actors, like Errol Flynn and Marilyn
Monroe, who are
remembered more for their erotic nature than their actual performance
skills exemplify an Eros/AP contact. It adds charisma, charm and intensity,
making it difficult to go unnoticed. Where is 0 Degrees of Libra in
your natal chart? That's the area of life you may express this energy.
Please feel free to share your view about this conjunction on the forum.
Via
Combust
“…to ignore the
Via Combusta is a mistake." Barbara
Watters
Eros will be crossing the Via
Combust between November 19th and the 26th of December. In
the tropical zodiac, the area between 15 Libra and 15 Scorpio is called
the “Via Combusta” or Fiery Way.
It is considered hazardous in horary charts, especially if the Sun,
Moon or Ascendant is found there. The only safe place, the only protected
degrees, are the fixed star Spica at 23 Libra and the fixed star Arcturus
at 24 Libra. These beneficial stars negate the deleterious effects
of the Via Combusta.
This is not to say that having
a natal planet or point in the Via Combust Way always equates with
disaster. Of course it does
not. It is a point to watch with transits, being mindful more of the “tricky” than
difficult, more of the disruptive than the out and out dangerous. It
can be like an area of sudden surprise, insight and
sometimes disruption. With Eros traversing this part of the zodiac,
(and Jupiter there too) it is good to keep our eyes open if a planet
or point is activated.
Eros
& Chiron
Seducing your doctor? Healing sexual hurts? --Mystic
Medusa
Eros & Chiron transits can feel
earthy and tangible. They ignite inner emotions containing
compassion, audacity, conviction and the desire to dare. When Chiron
awakes, so does the wise counselor, teacher of heroes. A prolonged
transit to this point can expose deep wounds as well as the deeper
understanding required to heal them.
Not infrequently, this transit
links with a time of exploring past hurts and patterns of behavior effecting the ability
to relate. Delving into these lesions can bring about insights and
perceptions that lead to change. The partner, lover, friend or therapist
can take on the role of faithful companion, accompanying the individual
into areas of unexplored trauma.
This transit may also signify the
appearance of an individual that enters the life as a teacher or
guide, offering a course of study, suggesting a relevant book or simply
being open to communicate on an earnest level. We may be incline to
fall in love with this mysterious guru. Certainly, with Chiron involved,
a physical attraction may be likely. (understatement) Long
term transits usually indicates more than a brief encounter, although
the experience is prone to be heart felt, regardless of the duration.
Eros & Juno
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss in the cup,
And I’ll not look for wine.
--Ben Jonson
When Eros touches Juno by transit,
she is likely to get the shivers. Not opposed to love and union, an awakened Juno may
go out looking for the perfect match, a partner to spend the rest of
her life with. What she does, if she finds Eros instead, is not totally
clear.
Juno may be reticent to take the
risks implied in an
Eros encounter. She may find the taboo nature of the god difficult
to honor and the extreme intensity overwhelming. Dedicated and steadfast,
the roller-coaster ride of Eros may make the matronly Juno feel sick
to her stomach.
What Juno wants is a commitment
but with Eros involved, that may be a big ask. This could ignite the raging side of Juno, bringing
up feelings of frustration, jealousy and demand. She may also be incline
to enact righteous retribution on those she feels have transgressed,
or are the products of a transgression.
A prolonged transit from Eros to Juno could indicate
a confrontation with these conflicting issues: trust, integrity,
freedom, commitment, jealousy, vengeance. This may coincide with the
opportunity to experience these dynamic feelings through the presence
of another: a tantalizing person that opens the door to divine, but
not necessarily permanent, love.
Eros & Neptune
Perfume, magic & love spells! --Mystic
Medusa
So the lively force of his mind has broken
down all the barriers, and he has past far beyond the fiery walls
of the world, and in mind and spirit has traversed the boundless
universe. --Lucretius
When the god of numinous spirit
and the god of love land on a personal planet, generally
one is a goner. If
this transit manifests at all in the conscious awareness, it drowns
us in a sea of unity with the divine, lifting us so far above the mundane
matters of the world we can see only the immortal beloved.
Usually we feel rather romantically incline, if not helplessly head
over heals in love.
What may be going on is a reminder
call about the spiritual world, about the inner experience of the ineffable. This can rarely
be processed in any rational or personal way but is readily scooped
up into a projection of longing for the usually unobtainable other.
Hopelessly impossible relationships dangle between
people who have little or no chance of being with each other in any conventional sense
of the word. The mystery of it all is that this does not seem to matter.
What matters are the feelings evoked. Quite
possibly, there will be times when these feelings far surpass any sensation
ever experienced before, defying translation into rational forms of communiqué.
The awakening may seem based on tremendous sensual and sexual attraction
yet the results can be a peak or religious experience.
With this contact, the spirits leave the bodies and mingle together in
a world impossible to 'know'.. The relationship takes place in that ‘other
realm’ where everything merges into one continuum of energy and
light. This is not an ordinary infatuation, this is communion with
the god.
Of course, the 'other' will
be mortal and in that sense, ordinary. The odds of disappointment
are very high and along with the enrapture of this contact comes the
concurrent pain, disappointment and grief. If we are willing to have
the whole experience, without skimping on the accompanying sense of
loss and disconnection, the results can be magnificent. What can eventuate
is a very real contact with the inner divinity and when that is offered
through the beloved, who would say no?

Libra
The Sign
of Libra is symbolized by the scales, the only inanimate object
in the zodiac. Oddly
also is Libra’s fluctuating arrival into the order of the
constellations. To the ancient Greeks, there was no Libra but
instead, 60 degrees of Scorpio! Yet before, in Babylon and after,
in Rome, there was the current 30 degrees of each sign, including
Libra! Goddess, make up your mind!
Libra was
said to be “created”
from the ancient Scorpion's claws by the Romans, though as early
as 2000 BCE, the constellation of Libra was associated with
the judgment of the living and the dead in Babylonia. Here,
Zabanitu, who represented the Scales, weighed souls of the
deceased. The Sumerians called Libra Zi-Ba An-Na - 'the Balance
of Heaven'.
The Greeks
merged the stars of Libra into Scorpio and the presence of
the scales was not again recorded until they suddenly (and
mysteriously) reappeared in Roman times. In between,
these stars were seen as the Scorpion's claws, but the image
of the scales was recognized elsewhere, perhaps Mesopotamian
in origin. Sometimes the Scales are seen placed in the right
hand of Virgo, represented by Astraea, the Starry Goddess.
Astraea or Virgo was seen as linking the constellations of
Virgo and Libra…Libra making a bridge between Virgo
and Scorpio. The symbols certainly resonates with this concept.
An origin
myth of Libra: Astraea
used to live among mortals during the golden age of mankind,
Saturn’s age. In the pans of her great golden scales,
she carefully weighed the positive and
negative deeds of men
and women, thereby deciding their many different fates. After
a time, (and after Saturn’s age) Astraea became disturbed
by the actions of her people. Without
warning, she abandoned them, returning to the heaven to joining Demeter as the constellation
of the Virgin Goddess. She left in such a rush, her scales fell
behind. Out of fear, and honor, the Romans created the constellation
of Libra from the ancient Scorpion's claws so that The Scales
would always be nearby Astraea in the sky.
Eventually the stars of Libra
came to represent the Golden Chariot of
Pluto. The Egyptians
also saw Libra as a set of scales, one in which the human heart
was to be weighted after death, "the
Scales of Justice."
In India, the constellation
was called Tula,
meaning "a balance," showed a man bent on one knee,
holding the scales.
The ancient Chinese called
the constellation Show Sing, "the Star of Longevity," but later generation
changed the name to Tien Ching, meaning "the Celestial Balance."
