A Montage of Hegemonies
by Kim Falconer
A tour of narrative, sound and imagery, this site portrays the social and cultural assumptions that dictate human and non-human lives. Developed as a project for the LPW604 Online Writing unit in Swinburne University of Technology’s Master of Arts-(Writing) program, A Montage of Hegemonies is an experiment in Hypertext-fiction. It explores the relationship between form and content, identity and identification and cultural biases by offering a single short story told through multiple lenses.
Take your time and have a look around -- there are 6 main stories and close to 100 hypertext links throughout. Please allow for pop-ups on IE or Firefox so you can read the hidden text behind headers and follow links under many of the images. You can create your own meaning and order, becoming a writerly-reader al la Barthes and Derrida, or follow a traditional linear approach. It's up to you to make of it what you will. Please also give the flash slide shows time to load—the felines take about 1.5+ minutes depending on your internet speed—and hover the mouse everywhere—almost everything is clickable! Best viewed at 1152 x 864 or higher. Enjoy! --Kim
